How do you improve your head health? By walking and talking your way along the Capricorn Coast!
The Walk for Wellbeing is just 7 weeks away and registrations are coming in fast. The early bird registrations that arrive by the end of today will be lucky enough to snaffle a shirt to walk in!
Last year, 150 people took an amble along the ocean for the Walk for Wellbeing, this year’s set to be even bigger. The event is just one of the Capricorn Coast events forming part of the Livingstone Shire Council’s celebrations for Queensland Mental Health Week that runs from Saturday 4 October to 13 October 2025, with World Mental Health day falling on Friday 10 October.
Walk organiser and The Hub Founder Shanelle Schick says if you’re aiming to be the first person over the finish line, on Sunday 12 October, you might want to think again. First person over the finish line gets a very important job.
“The aim of the walk when we start at 6.00am, is to take your time to enjoy the morning and the day. It’s not about the fittest or the fastest. In fact, the first person to Kemp Beach gets a pair of tongs and will be put to work cooking the barbecque!
“In life, there are so many competitive things. It’s nice to just get out and do something for the fun of it.
Walkers for Wellbeing’s first stop is Lammermoor Beach. There’ll be time to grab a coffee or a water from event supporter Aussie Gold. Walkers going further will continue on for another four or so kilometres to Kemp Beach.
“Life is just so busy, we want to make sure there are breaks factored into the walk, so everyone taking part has the chance to slow down and really enjoy the morning,” Shanelle said.
SES and Queensland Fire and Rescue will be watching over the walkers and making sure anyone who needs a hand gets one.
It’s a big job for one person with children and a job to organise an event like this for the fourth year running. What motivates someone to volunteer their time organising logistics and encouraging the community to Walk for Wellbeing? Shanelle’s broad smile explains it all.
“When you see everyone at the start of the walk, there are lots of little separate groups of people. By the end of the walk at Kemp Beach, the groups are much bigger and friendships are being made,” Shanelle says.
The walkers make an effort to make other people smile too.
“We have a beautiful group of women that have been coming every year. They dress up and wear their tutus, it’s so nice to see,” Shanelle said.
Local businesses have gotten behind the event including; Zest Health and Wellness, Kirra G PT, Yeppoon SES, Aussie Gold Natural Spring Water, Queensland Country Women’s Association Emu Park, Queensland Fire and Rescue and Mr Perfect who cooks a hot breakfast for us at the end.
